Buy vs. rent a proxy server: which is cheaper?
Most residential providers rent bandwidth. They do not sell IPs. Your pricing model affects total cost more than the listed rate. Pay-as-you-go works for one-time projects, testing, or unpredictable use. There is no commitment. Credits may not expire. The per-GB rate is higher, but you do not pay for unused bandwidth.
Monthly subscriptions offer lower per-GB rates if your usage is high and predictable. Unused bandwidth is wasted. You can start with pay-as-you-go. Switch to a subscription when your usage is high and predictable.
What affects proxy pricing
Network type
The source of the IP address is the main determinant of price.
- Residential proxies: These utilize real user devices. They are the most expensive (avg. $8/GB) due to their high anonymity and complex sourcing, as seen in our Bright Data and Oxylabs pricing.
- Datacenter proxies: They are cheap (starting from $0.50/IP at Webshare) but easier for websites to detect and block.
Exclusivity: Shared vs. dedicated
- Shared IPs: The cost is split among multiple users, making this the affordable option. However, bad neighbors (other users spamming) can get the IP banned.
- Dedicated (private) IPs: You pay a premium to be the sole user. However, can double your monthly cost.
Granular targeting (hidden cost)
- Country level: Usually included in the base price.
- City/State level: Targeting a specific city can add high costs.
Payment model: Commitment vs. flexibility

We use three rules to keep the comparison fair.
1.Standard monthly pricing:
We use public, pay-as-you-go and monthly prices. We skip annual discounts, long-term contracts, and custom enterprise deals. Providers often quote their best price under one of these conditions, but most buyers don’t commit to a year or negotiate a custom deal before they’ve tested the service. Using the standard monthly rate shows what you’d actually pay if you signed up today, with no strings attached.
2. Cheapest plan:
For each usage tier (e.g., 50GB or 1,000 IPs), we check all public pricing options from a provider, flat-rate packages, pay-as-you-go rates, and overage fees, and pick the option with the lowest total monthly cost.
Providers often sell the same volume through more than 1 plan, and the cheapest one isn’t always the one they promote. A provider might list a $50/month plan for 20GB, but also offer pay-as-you-go at a rate that ends up cheaper for the same 20GB once you do the math.
3. Value per dollar:
We turn every price into a simple ratio: Value per dollar = Total volume (GB or IPs) / Total monthly cost ($) A higher number means a better deal at that usage level.
For example, if Provider A gives you 50GB for $200, that’s 0.25 GB per dollar. If Provider B gives you 50GB for $150, that’s 0.33 GB per dollar, a better deal.
